The first chapter is from the protagonist Sasha's point of view. Sasha is a kleptomaniac and the first chapter is about her date with Alex. The story switches between her date and a session with her therapist. Her condition changes the course of her date because after she steals the wallet, the whole date changes. She feels bad because he is getting so worked up about it and she doesn't want him to know about her problem. When they are back at her apartment her demeanor changes when he asks her about all the objects that she's stolen. She takes a big step when she lets him use bath salts that she had taken form her best friend. "She was aware of having made a move in the story she and Coz were writing, taken a symbolic step. But toward the happy ending, or away from it?" (17).
